You’ve bought your first bakhoor. You’re excited. You light the charcoal, place a piece on top, and within minutes your entire house is filled with smoke so thick you can barely see the television. Sound familiar?
The problem isn’t the bakhoor — it’s that nobody told you how much to use.
The Simple Answer: Fingernail-Sized
A piece roughly the size of a fingernail is usually enough for a room or two. Most beginners use five to ten times more than they need: they see the small pieces, assume it can’t be enough, and keep adding — then wonder why their eyes are watering.
Why less is more: bakhoor continues to release scent for several minutes after the smoke appears, the scent builds gradually, and soft furnishings like curtains and sofas absorb and hold the scent for hours. You can always add more. You cannot take it back.
How to Judge the Right Amount
| Room Size | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom or bathroom | Quarter-fingernail | A very small piece goes a long way |
| Standard living room | Fingernail-sized | The standard recommendation |
| Open-plan living area | Fingernail + small top-up | Add more after 15 minutes if needed |
| Multiple rooms | One piece, carried through | Don’t over-burn in one room |
What Happens If You Use Too Much
Using too much bakhoor doesn’t make your home smell better — it makes it smell worse. You get acrid smoke instead of fragrant smoke, headaches from excess smoke inhalation, scent fatigue (you stop noticing it, but your guests don’t), and you’ll burn through your supply in days instead of weeks.
The One Exception: Large Gatherings
The only time you might need more is when scenting for a large gathering or a very open space. Even then, start with one piece and add after fifteen minutes if needed. Bakhoor is meant to be a background warmth, not a smoke bomb.
