How to Store Perfume Properly (And Make It Last for Years)

A well-stored bottle of perfume can stay fresh for 5-10 years or more. A badly-stored one can start to turn within months. Here’s how to protect your collection.

The Three Enemies of Perfume

1. Light (especially sunlight)

UV light breaks down fragrance molecules over time, which is why perfume counters are often dimly lit and why so many quality bottles use tinted or opaque glass.

2. Heat

Warmth accelerates the chemical breakdown of fragrance oils. A bathroom shelf near a hot shower, or a car glovebox in summer, are two of the worst places to keep perfume.

3. Air Exposure

Every time a bottle is opened, a small amount of oxygen gets in, which can very slowly oxidise the fragrance. This is unavoidable with normal use, but keeping the cap on tightly between uses slows the process.

Best Practice Storage

• Store in a cool, dark place — a bedroom drawer or wardrobe shelf, not a bathroom cabinet.
• Keep the original box if you have it — it blocks light entirely.
• Store bottles upright to reduce the amount of liquid in contact with the cap/spray mechanism.
• Avoid temperature swings — don’t move bottles repeatedly between hot and cold environments.

Signs Your Perfume Has Turned

A fragrance that’s degraded will usually smell noticeably different from when you bought it — often flatter, sourer, or more like alcohol than the original notes. If in doubt, spray a little on a paper strip rather than your skin first.

Does This Apply to Oud and Amber-Based Fragrances Too?

Heavier, resin-based fragrances (like most of the Reef range) tend to be somewhat more stable than light citrus or aquatic scents, but the same storage rules still apply — a saffron-oud EDP like Reef 33 will still last longest stored properly, away from heat and light.
