What Is Oud?
Oud is a resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees when infected with a specific mould. The tree produces a dark, fragrant resin to protect itself. This resin-saturated wood, called agarwood, is harvested to produce oud oil. Because the process takes years and is unpredictable, genuine oud is rare and costly.
How Does Oud Smell?
Oud has a complex, multi-layered character. Most people experience it as woody, deep, and earthy. There is a resinous warmth underneath, often with a faint smokiness and a subtle sweetness. In its raw form, oud can also have an animalic quality that many fragrance lovers find compelling.
Origin Changes the Smell
Indian oud is the most intense: smoky, animalic, and deep. Cambodian oud is sweeter and lighter. Indonesian oud is woody with faint floral tones. Most modern oud fragrances use blended accords designed to deliver the warmth and depth without the full intensity of raw agarwood oil.
