What is in an amber accord
A classic amber accord is built from a few warm, balsamic materials:
- Labdanum: a sticky resin from the rockrose shrub. Deep, leathery, honeyed and slightly animalic.
- Benzoin: a resin with a sweet, vanilla-like, cinnamon-tinged warmth.
- Vanilla: adds creamy sweetness and softness.
- Other supports: tonka bean, styrax, woods, musks and spices are often used to shape the final character.
Every perfumer blends these differently, which is why one amber can smell like honey and another like incense.
Amber is not what you think
Three different things share the name, and they are not the same:
