What musk actually is
Musk was originally an animal material taken from the male musk deer. Because the deer is protected and the trade in natural musk is heavily restricted, virtually all musk in modern perfume is synthetic. Perfumers use a family of laboratory-made musk molecules that reproduce different facets of the original: some are clean and airy, some are powdery, some are warm and skin-like.
That is good news for buyers. Synthetic musks are consistent, cruelty-free and the reason musk appears in so many affordable fragrances.

“White musk” is mostly a marketing term for the clean, soft end of the range. It is the type that most often appears in everyday Arabian fragrances.
Why musk matters in a fragrance
Musk molecules are large and evaporate slowly, so musk usually sits at the base of a fragrance. It does three jobs. It softens sharper notes, it blends florals and woods together, and it helps a scent linger on skin and fabric. Musk is rarely the loudest part of a perfume, but take it out and the composition often feels thin.

How to wear musk
Musk is a natural fit for offices, shared spaces and anyone who dislikes loud fragrance. A soft musk can seem to disappear after an hour or two, but this is often nose blindness, because we stop noticing scents we are constantly exposed to, rather than the fragrance actually fading.
