Sandalwood smells creamy, soft and gently woody, with a warm, slightly milky sweetness. It is the opposite of a sharp, dry wood. If cedar is a pencil shaving and oud is a smoky, resinous forest, sandalwood is a smooth, polished wooden bowl that has been warmed in your hands.
The four things sandalwood smells like
- Creamy and milky. This is the signature. Good sandalwood has a rounded, almost dairy softness that makes a fragrance feel smooth.
- Soft and woody. There is real wood in it, but it is gentle, dry-sweet and never splintery.
- Warm and slightly sweet. Think of the warmth of skin rather than sugar. It pairs naturally with vanilla and amber.
- Faintly balsamic and spicy. In richer versions you may notice a soft resinous, incense-like edge.
Where sandalwood comes from
Traditional perfumery sandalwood comes from the heartwood of trees in the Santalum genus. The best known is Indian sandalwood (Santalum album), long associated with the Mysore region. Australian sandalwood is also used and has a somewhat different, drier profile. The trees grow slowly and the fragrant heartwood takes many years to develop, which is why genuine sandalwood oil is expensive and why Indian sandalwood is treated as a threatened species.
Because of that, many modern perfumes build their sandalwood note with synthetic sandalwood molecules, or blend a little natural oil with them. This is not a flaw. Well-made synthetic sandalwood is more consistent, more sustainable and often smoother than the natural material. What matters is how the fragrance smells on your skin, not whether the note is natural.
Sandalwood in Arabian perfumery
Sandalwood has a long history in Middle Eastern and South Asian scent traditions, where it is often paired with oud, rose and musk, and is a common foundation in traditional oil-based attars. In Arabian eau de parfum it usually acts as a soft base note that rounds off a sharper opening, adding warmth without heaviness.
